Truthfully each portrait session is organic in nature as, even though - of course - many plans are made in advance considering colour choices, lighting set-ups, my client’s session hopes + her empowerment -
the real magic always happens when the alchemic-goodness of
creating together happens. ✨

Our family has been blessed to know Abby for years… she’s authentic, smart, kind, trustworthy, and thoughtful… we are forever grateful for her, and her family’s, presence in our lives.
Shortly after this project idea had galvanized, and before any sessions had happened, I asked Abby if she might be willing to sit for one of the pieces. She said ‘yes’ and - as graciously as she so typically is - offered for me to take the lead.
With a fervent desire to honour Abby; my first idea was to incorporate famed Mexican artist and activist Frida Khalo, as we have both long been intrigued by the enigmatic and socially-minded artist. With that, I started daydreaming and wondered if we might also be able to incorporate Abby’s Métis lineage, which I felt so seamlessly tied into everything I admire about Abby + Frida: truth, respect, courage, authenticity, and wisdom.

As I pondered elements that would help to honour Abby, her Métis lineage, and Frida; I landed on the following ‘broad stroke’ inspirations: flowers, bees, vibrancy, Canada, the Métis flag, the Assomption Sash, a dash of surrealism, and ‘paint’. I also wanted to weave in the threads of: honour, history, legacy, a gentle hand, and pensiveness.
I haven’t done a lot of ‘full set design’ work and, as with anything, it’s a lot harder than one might think! 🙃 I am so grateful for a patient subject, a willing assistant, faux flowers in the middle of winter, the pivotal family sash that Abby’s great uncle allowed her to bring, and the software that allowed me the opportunity to ultimately render what I’d envisioned.
Abby, you are a GEM of a human being and I am so deeply honoured that you would say yes to my ask. I will be forever grateful for your friendship, collaboration and trust. THANK YOU ❤️ I would also like to thank your mom and uncle for the enormous gift of the family Assomption Sash for this session. ✨
Last, but never least, my thanks to Marie for assisting on this shoot…including laying on the floor to hold flowers + lighting, helping to place flowers in Abby’s hair, and for capturing a secret (🦄) bts of me. 🖤
