However, when choosing which to draw inspiration from + to honour, I was most drawn to the portrait he made of Sir Winston Churchill, titled: ‘The Roaring Lion’.

With a fervent desire to honour Abby; my first idea was to incorporate Frida Khalo, as we have both long been intrigued by the enigmatic and socially-minded artist. With that, I started daydreaming and wondered if we might also be able to incorporate Abby’s Métis lineage, which I felt so seamlessly tied into everything I admire about both Abby AND Frida.

I am reminded of Joni Mitchell’s song ‘Both Sides Now’… to me, this song is a poetic reminder that we can hold both idealism and beauty in our hearts + heads, while also being grounded that life isn’t always easy. Of course: for there to be light, there must also be shadow, and vice versa.
